Spring Break

As many of you know, the U of M’s spring break is this week. I thought I’d be able to take some time off and relax, but so far it has been pretty hectic with work. I was originally only scheduled for both Sunday’s of Spring Break, but I’ve ended up working on Tuesday-Friday. At least I’ve been working at some different stores so it’s not so boring.

The Gopher Basketball Banquet was on Monday of this week. We got to the hotel (it was at the Hilton in downtown) and played for a while (30-60 minutes?). Then sat down and ate dinner. The meal was really good (I haven’t had steak in ages!) and the company was even better—being able to talk to band people that I hadn’t seen in a little while.

Then we had to wait through all of the talks and speeches. Monson got up and talked a bit about each player and then let the Seniors say whatever they wanted. On the whole it took a quite a while and was mostly boring since I don’t know any of the players on a personal level. There were certain interesting parts because I guess the Basketball Player’s have a sense of humor as well. There were the jokes about people’s sexuality (although in a nice fashion, especially since one of the one of the gay-joke targets is now engaged). There was talk of “putting three people in a box and seeing who would come out”… a sort of who’s the best competition mind game. I think it would have been a lot funnier if I knew about the inside jokes ahead of time.

Michael Bauer spoke last (since he was the “best” senior). He got very emotional, especially when talking about how he almost lost his father and his brother during his college career. It was very touching (and honestly it was close to bringing tears to my eyes). Monson must have been apprehensive about letting him talk after the “incident” in Indianapolis at the Pep Fest in which Micheal quoted his brother as saying, “Beat the F— out of Wisconsin.”

The evening concluded with a rendition of the rouser, likely the last time I will play it this school year! Only 5 more months until Spat Camp!

The City of God

Ok, since Tara voted for The City of God, that’s what we’ll go see. (Oh, and I saw 21 Grams today — so awesome!).

The movie starts at 1:10 at Block E. We’ll be boarding the bus at 12:45 or so, meaning we’ll meet at 12:35 (sharp!) in the lobby. Alternatively, we could meet for brunch at UDS.

I hope y’all show up! (Oh, let me know if you’re coming so we don’t leave without you).

Spring Sunday Movie Watching

Ok, so the weather is undeniably beautiful outside (or at least way better than the -30 degrees), so I think it’s time to go out one of these weekends (read: this Sunday) and see a quality (ie: Oscar nominated) movie.

Movies under consideration for seeing this Sunday (Feb 22nd) would be:

  • City of God
  • The Fog of War
  • 21 Grams

If you don’t know anything about the movies, try IMDB or Apple: Movie Trailers.

I was shooting for a matinee showing of the movies (ie: starting between 12:20 and 1:20 or so). City of God is playing at Block E in Minneapolis, the latter two are playing at the Landmark Lagoon theater in Uptown. Obviously costs would involve the movie ticket ($5-ish) and round trip bus rides.

Feel free to indicate your desire (or lack thereof) to attend this weekend and a preference for the movie. I’m sure all would be a delight to see.

Shake it like a Polaroid Picture?

From Polaroid’s FAQ:

Should I really “shake it like a Polaroid picture?”

Question:
Ever since the song “Hey Ya” by Andre 3000 of Outkast came out, everyone is shaking their Polaroid pictures. I have always been told that you should not shake a Polaroid picture, but I’m having a hard time convincing those around me that this is true. What is the answer?

Answer:
The short answer is no, you don’t have to (and shouldn’t) “shake it like a Polaroid picture.”

Shaking or waving a Polaroid picture to help the development process originated in the early days of peel-apart film. After peeling the negative, the image needed to dry before it could be handled, so waving the photo helped it to dry more quickly.

When using the integral films (600, Spectra, 500, SX-70/Time-Zero, i-Zone) that are used in our most popular current camera models (Polaroid One, OneStep, JoyCam, etc.), the image develops and dries behind a clear plastic window and never touches the air, so shaking or waving has no effect.

In fact, shaking or waving can actually damage the image. Rapid movement during development can cause portions of the film to separate prematurely, or can cause “blobs” in the picture.

The best way to ensure a perfectly developed image is to simply lay the picture on a flat surface immediately after it exits the camera. Shield it from the wind and avoid bending, twisting, or otherwise disturbing it during development.

Hey Ya

Playing Hey Ya in our Trombone/Euphonium ensemble in UBand was the coolest. Mo stopped in the middle of teacher her trumpets Hail Min just to come listen!

It rocks. And Price hates it which is even funnier.

Beyer’s Sun Bowl Pictures

Hey, I got my hands on Matt Beyer’s Sun Bowl Pictures so I’m proud to announce that they are online (in a reduced size). Matt is working on getting the full size originals online sometime soon. So without further ado: Beyer’s Sun Bowl Pictures.

Don’t forget to check out my Sun Bowl Pictures as well.

Update: Beyer now has his full sized pictures from the digital camera online and labeled!

Update (Jun 9, 2004): Since the ITLabs site goes down for the summer, I’ve uploaded the pictures to my local photos.

My New Home in Cyberspace

Sorry about the horribly long URL. There’s not much I can do to avoid it :(. If the page looks broken in some way to you or the color scheme is just so horrible (I know.. I am colorblind-at least a little), please drop me an email.

I’m really looking forward to moving back into the dorms in just a few days! Right now the plan looks like hauling most of my stuff to the U on Saturday, working on Sunday, and then moving in either Sunday night or Monday morning.

The stitches in my head seem to be healing great. The one has a scab growing over it, but I assume that’ll be okay. If any of y’all want pictures, I’m sure I could send them.

Speaking of pictures, I’ll reiterate that I have Sun Bowl Pictures available for your viewing pleasure.

U Band

Dude, everybody at the U should do UBand in the spring. I’m pumped. Anyway, I got Diem’s email today… what time (early or late) did y’all choose?

Long Time, No Updates

It’s been a while since my last update (1.5 weeks!). I want to start by wishing everybody a happy new year. I hope all your dreams come true. Well, those of you who have good dreams, like Howard Dean getting elected. Bah, enough politics.

Did I mention that El Paso is a dump. Oh, but don’t get me wrong I had a great time at the Sun Bowl (Yay Gophers!). But really… El Paso is a sorry excuse for a nice town. It’s dusty and dirty. The water tastes bad. All of the housing developments were like little islands in a sea of desert, with the houses packed as close together as possible (why? there’s TONS of open land). The roads and streets were filled with litter. Maybe Texas should put their convicts to work instead of giving them all the death penalty?

Well, I’m sure y’all want to see pictures…. So here you go: SUN BOWL PICTURES. I also spent a little bit of time the past couple of days digitizing parts of the television broadcast of the sun bowl. I’m clearly visible in one of them while carrying one of the Big Ten flags in pregame. I know why my mom asked me if I shaved, as I look really scruffy on tv. Oh, and the Oregon Cheerleaders were hot.

Update:
I’m being dumb and forgot to mention that (when my computer is on) all of my pictures can be accessed via http://froehle.dyndns.org:88/gallery/ including pictures from the Sun Bowl.
