Nike Commercial

Commercials like the Nike one with Lance Armstrong just make me want to watch commercials again.

Lance Armstrong on his bike in the Commercial

The music is touching, sending a shiver up my spine. I looked for the song online, but wasn’t disappointed when I found out that the music was custom made for the commerical by the company who put it together.

The most redeeming quality of the commercial is that it isn’t trying to sell you anything. Instead, it merely shows Lance riding his bike with some bikers and buffalo, being watched bunch of hospital kids, riding alone at night, and riding in the street with hundreds chasing him.

However, the most memorable moment is the final scene with the little kid that pedals so hard to catch up with him. Then the “Just do it” and Nike Swoosh appear and the commercial ends.

Too bad all commercials can’t take such a laid back attitude.

Coming from a man who writes and directs movies and unfortuanetely critiques most movies and advertisements, I have to admit that I love the new Lance Armstrong Nike Commercial. The music is terrific, and the camera work is quite brilliant.

I’ve watched the commercial several times. And I’m convinced that the last scene is actually old movie film of HIM as a little kid riding a bike, and they merged it in with him showing little Lance catching up, and big Lance looks back, sees where it all started (as a little kid on a bike) and smiles.

The reason I think this — look closely at the helmet the little kid is wearing. It is NOT a modern bicycle helmet, not even the type little kids wear nowadays. It’s really a football helmet, the sort of thing my mom made me wear when I was a kid riding a bicycle before helmets became what they now are.

Also, the film clip showing just the little kid is old and faded, like an actual old home movie.

For these reasons, I think that that’s what it is. I would be interested to know other thoughts.

Joe – That’s really interesting. You can tell that they never actually filmed Lance with the kid, given that they are never in the same frame together. If it turns out to really be Lance, that’s awesome.

You are right that the footage looks faded. However, there aren’t any other real tell-tale signs that the footage is old. You can’t really see any houses or cars, and it’s set in the country.
