The City of God

Ok, since Tara voted for The City of God, that’s what we’ll go see. (Oh, and I saw 21 Grams today — so awesome!).

The movie starts at 1:10 at Block E. We’ll be boarding the bus at 12:45 or so, meaning we’ll meet at 12:35 (sharp!) in the lobby. Alternatively, we could meet for brunch at UDS.

I hope y’all show up! (Oh, let me know if you’re coming so we don’t leave without you).

Spring Sunday Movie Watching

Ok, so the weather is undeniably beautiful outside (or at least way better than the -30 degrees), so I think it’s time to go out one of these weekends (read: this Sunday) and see a quality (ie: Oscar nominated) movie.

Movies under consideration for seeing this Sunday (Feb 22nd) would be:

  • City of God
  • The Fog of War
  • 21 Grams

If you don’t know anything about the movies, try IMDB or Apple: Movie Trailers.

I was shooting for a matinee showing of the movies (ie: starting between 12:20 and 1:20 or so). City of God is playing at Block E in Minneapolis, the latter two are playing at the Landmark Lagoon theater in Uptown. Obviously costs would involve the movie ticket ($5-ish) and round trip bus rides.

Feel free to indicate your desire (or lack thereof) to attend this weekend and a preference for the movie. I’m sure all would be a delight to see.

Shake it like a Polaroid Picture?

From Polaroid’s FAQ:

Should I really “shake it like a Polaroid picture?”

Question:
Ever since the song “Hey Ya” by Andre 3000 of Outkast came out, everyone is shaking their Polaroid pictures. I have always been told that you should not shake a Polaroid picture, but I’m having a hard time convincing those around me that this is true. What is the answer?

Answer:
The short answer is no, you don’t have to (and shouldn’t) “shake it like a Polaroid picture.”

Shaking or waving a Polaroid picture to help the development process originated in the early days of peel-apart film. After peeling the negative, the image needed to dry before it could be handled, so waving the photo helped it to dry more quickly.

When using the integral films (600, Spectra, 500, SX-70/Time-Zero, i-Zone) that are used in our most popular current camera models (Polaroid One, OneStep, JoyCam, etc.), the image develops and dries behind a clear plastic window and never touches the air, so shaking or waving has no effect.

In fact, shaking or waving can actually damage the image. Rapid movement during development can cause portions of the film to separate prematurely, or can cause “blobs” in the picture.

The best way to ensure a perfectly developed image is to simply lay the picture on a flat surface immediately after it exits the camera. Shield it from the wind and avoid bending, twisting, or otherwise disturbing it during development.

Where Should I Live Next Year?

I’m soliciting advice for living options next year. Right now the only places I’ve really considered have been Middlebrook New Addition and Riverbend Commons.

  1. Middlebrook:
    • Benefits:
      • I’d know a bunch of people living here
      • It’s pretty affordable
      • I’ve already lived here once
      • Negatives:
      • It’s on the west bank and all of my classes are on the east bank
      • The rooms are still pretty small
    • Stuck with dorm food for another year
  2. Riverbend:
    • Benefits:
      • Bigger rooms
      • A kitchen so I could cook
      • Closer to all of my classes
      • Negatives:
      • More expensive
      • I’d have to learn how to cook for myself
  • Wouldn’t know as many people living there

Does anybody have any suggestions? Off campus housing would certainly be an option as well.

New Features: About / Photos

A couple new features today. First off I added an about page (with a link that works!) so y’all can find out more than you ever wanted to know about me. It also conveniently includes my PGP key so you are covered if you need to send me a very private email.

I’ll add a link to my resume eventually, too. Although my resume does need some polishing up (hopefully I won’t have to use it anytime soon!).

In other news my physics research is making some progress. I took some data, but the data doesn’t tell me much besides that I need to replace the op-amp in my circuit with something that operates at a higher speed. Anyway, I’ve got an OP-27 in there now which has a higher slew rate.

I feel like I neglect this blog (which is the truth). I think setting up some sort of “photolog” of sorts would be way cool. The idea would be to take one picture every day and post it online. Something new and current and fun—everyday!

The only problem is that I don’t have a digital camera. Which means that I either need to steal the one that my family has or go buy one. If anybody has any recommendations, I’d be happy to listen.

Hey Ya

Playing Hey Ya in our Trombone/Euphonium ensemble in UBand was the coolest. Mo stopped in the middle of teacher her trumpets Hail Min just to come listen!

It rocks. And Price hates it which is even funnier.
